A bit of history about Afandou. It was deliberately built out of sight of the sea to protect it from marauding pirates during the middle ages. Nowadays the attraction is something else. If you have the chance to book in one of the hotels near the beach, do so. It’s over 4km long, assure shades of blue and an absolute paradise.
The beach truly massive, there are some larger, but not many as good on the island! Warm water that is absolutely crystal clear, kids would love to explore the caves on the left hand side of the beach, great big rocks and caves.
The Saint Luka Festival is held on the 18th October to close the season off, it opens with the Saint George Festival on the 23rd April
The village was founded as I have previously said during the era when pirates used to raid many of the Mediterranean islands. In that age, the people of various villages and seek safety in the mountains that form the centre of the island. Afandou, means invisible in Greek or “afandos”, as it cannot be seen from the sea.
Located 5Km up the road from Faliraki, you get to it from the main road to Lindos. It is one of the largest and oldest villages on Rhodes. Afandou is quite large, not really a tourist staying location like Lindos, the population is well over 6000 people and as such, there is a range of shops that sell far more that most of the tourist villages.
One fantastic place of interest on the way back from the beach must be the church of Our Lady on the village’s main square. Dependent on the time of day the square has a lot of the older locals there who use it as a meeting point. The square has a great selection of bars that are really local, plus there are a few old restaurants there. There is a well stocked supermarket that sells food and a range of souvenirs, make sure you visit the folk law museum, it’s quite interesting.
